The practice of floatation (also called floatation therapy) is quickly gaining popularity in the United States as a primary means of rest, relaxation, and recovery. Additionally, it is being used as an alternative to medicated solutions for chronic pain and generating notable results. The weightlessness achieved by effortlessly floating in a dense salt water solution makes it possible for the muscular, skeletal and circulatory systems to rest in a zero gravity environment, a unique sensation that only astronauts and free divers will regularly experience. Interestingly, the life of all animal offspring originates in this weightless environment, which speaks volumes to justifying the reason we find comfort in this state.


What is floatation therapy?

In 1954, neuropsychologist John C. Lilly invented the first floatation tank at the National Institute of Mental Health while researching conscious activity within the brain in an environment with complete sensory deprivation. Dr. Lilly concluded that brain activity does not cease or reach unconsciousness. Instead, it continues to construct experiences and dreams from stored memories. Decades later in the late 1970’s, Peter Suedfeld and Roderick Borrie experimented with the therapeutic benefits of floatation and coined this float therapy “R.E.S.T.”, Restricted Environmental Stimuli Technique (hence the name of our company).

Busy schedules, stress, physical activity, and overwhelming external stimulation propagated by technology and media takes a toll on your body. Through regular floatation, you will experience the absence of these stimuli, thereby allowing the mind and body to rest, relax, and recover.

For 90 minutes, you will float effortlessly inside your private float pod where you will perfect the art of doing nothing. Floating takes the pressure off your muscles and joints and through sensory deprivation, you are able to unlock the mind, find clarity, and re-evaluate your purpose and priorities.

The water is approximately 10 inches deep and saturated with over 800 pounds of Epsom salt creating such a high-density environment that complete weightlessness is achieved. The temperature of the water is heated to the same temperature as the surface of your skin, resulting in the sensory loss of the physical boundary between the water and your skin. Once settled in the pod, the brain enters into a prolonged “theta state” of consciousness which is said to be the deepest state of relaxation.
